Intake heater light

Thanks, 60vette. Purpose is to warm air going from the intake manifold into the engine during starting. It is on when the "Wait To Start" light on your dash is on. Cummins uses it instead of glow plugs. The colder the ambient temperature, the less willing your engine will be to start.

Folks who have grid delete spacers report that the truck goes through the motions of pulsing the heaters. If the intake air heater is not working you will get a code. Take the nut off the wire (8 or 10 MM socket) and remove it, and start the truck. The check engine light will come on. If you can read the code it will tell you the intake air heater voltage is low.Test the High-Pressure Relief - This is fairly simple with an advanced scan tool. Just command the regulator up to achieve max fuel pressure. This should be somewhere around 27,500 psi. So I took it apart and found it burnt across the contacts.On older trucks the grid heaters are separate units and can be replaced fairly easily with spacers if you really wanted to, but on a 97 the grid heaters are built into the intake cover. banyon. If the grid heater was on you would see the draw on the amp meter. Keep a test light in the truck with you & when it comes on see if the grid solenoid is getting power. It should have power to one side but not to the grid itself. The intake air sensor is the one at the air cleaner.The code is from the relay unplugged. The ECM is not seeing the relay. Try disconnecting the main power cable for the relay instead. The relay will still work. Just no longer supply power to the grid heater. I see no sensors for the grid heater circuit. See what you if any code you get after restoring the relay.
