The lower setting is fine for shifting gears but not for the PTO. You probably know this but if the tractor is new to you this might be an easy fix. Aug 28, 2012 / Ford 861 PTO not engaging #5. Hi there , just bought a 9030 at a sale. got it home and found out pto wont engage, still very new to this so i hope i dont sound to dumb, with tractor in nutrel , i engage pto with the switch in the cab, nothing, i know maybe iam missing something, or how can i test to find ..., For some the PTO lever was very hard to disengage and engage. I had to really muscle it either way. Finally I learned if I sprayed WD40 or lithium grease on the junction of the linkage (from behind the tractor, on left side) it would move in to and out of engagement much easier. I do not use the tractor that much now, just mowing 4 - 6 acres ...
